Clinical Nunez and Jota Lead Liverpool to a 3-1 Victory Over West Ham

Despite West Ham United’s fourth goal of the season from Jarrod Bowen, they lost 3-1 against Liverpool on Sunday.

Bowen’s goal, a spectacular diving header, tied the game at halftime after canceling out a penalty kick by Mohamed Salah, but Liverpool came storming back in the second half to score twice more.

On the hour mark, Darwin Nez’s volley gave them the lead for a second time, and Diogo Jota’s close-range strike sealed the deal for the Reds.

The loss was West Ham’s first on the road this season, and it dropped David Moyes’s squad to seventh place in the Premier League standings with 10 points after six contests.

West Ham got off to a good start, sending two crosses into the Liverpool penalty area in the first eight minutes.

Before Tomá Souek’s header, Michail Antonio fought hard for control in the left channel and passed the ball back to Lucas Paquetá. Alisson made a spectacular stop as the ball was headed towards the bottom left corner.

From the other wing, Souek turned provider and found Antonio, but the No. 9’s header went high and wide.

Although they got off to a poor start, Liverpool eventually earned a penalty kick and had an opportunity to take the lead after 16 minutes.

From a left-wing position, Nayef Aguerd tripped Salah as he tried to cut back inside after receiving a deflected ball from Luis Daz. The rest was handled by the Egyptian international, who sent his penalty shot straight down the centre despite Alphonse Areola diving to his right.

Liverpool looked comfortable after scoring and almost added to their lead when Alexis Mac Allister headed a clearing from Areola to Daz, who, with the Hammers spread, nearly found Salah on the outside. He attempted to hit the target first time, but the ball bobbled inexplicably and missed by a wide margin.

The away team rallied just before halftime, however, as Bowen continued his hot scoring streak with another goal with three minutes left in the first half.

Bowen was given the opportunity to shoot after Lucas Paquetá sent a lovely lofted ball forward. The No. 20 nodded back to Antonio, who passed out wide to Vladimr Coufal. He took a touch and crossed the ball to Bowen, who boldly dribbled past Virgil van Dijk and scored at the far post.

Shortly afterwards, Curtis Jones had an open net, but he was offside, and Areola stopped a shot by Nez to keep the score knotted at the half.

Liverpool had the first real opportunity of the second half when Salah slipped a ball to Nez, who should have done better than shooting wide of the right post.

Bowen headed a James Ward-Prowse free-kick straight at Alisson, but it was the home team that scored the following goal as the clock ticked beyond the hour mark.

The goal was set up by Mac Allister, who clipped the ball over for Nez to see it drop over his shoulder and volley past a hapless Areola.

The Hammers sent on substitutes Mohammed Kudus and Pablo Fornals in an attempt to get back into the game, with Fornals forcing Alisson to make a save with a shot from beyond the box.

After Virgil van Dijk headed an Andy Robertson corner back across goal, Liverpool’s triumph was sealed five minutes from time when Jota punched in a shot from close range.

Gomez, van Dijk, Matip, Robertson, Mac Allister (End 88), Jones (Gravenberch 77), Szoboszlai, Dáz (Gakpo 81), Salah, Néz (Diogo Jota 81), and Alisson make up Liverpool’s back line.
