West Ham United lost 3-1 at Liverpool on Sunday despite a goal from Jarrod Bowen, who now has four goals on the season.
After Mohamed Salah’s early penalty was cancelled out by Bowen’s magnificent diving header, the teams went into halftime tied, but Liverpool came out strong in the second half and scored twice more to win.
After taking the lead for the second time on the hour thanks to a volley from Darwin Nez, the Reds would go on to win thanks to a goal from Diogo Jota in close.
West Ham suffered their first road loss of the season, dropping them to seventh place in the Premier League standings with 10 points after six games.
In the first eight minutes, West Ham had the better of play, sending two crosses into the Liverpool penalty area.
First, Tomá Souek got his head on a cross from Lucas Paquetá after Michail Antonio fought hard for possession in the left channel and sent it back to him. The shot seemed a shoo-in for the bottom left corner, but Alisson made a spectacular stop.
Then, Souek switched roles and became the provider when he found Antonio on the wing, but the No. 9’s header went high and wide.
Liverpool started slowly but had an opportunity to take the lead after 16 minutes when they were awarded a penalty kick.
Nayef Aguerd tripped Salah as he tried to cut back inside after a ball from Luis Daz down the left flank had been diverted into his path. Alphonse Areola dove to his right, but the Egypt international calmly placed his penalty kick down the centre.
Alexis Mac Allister headed an Areola clearing to Daz, who, with the Hammers stretched, knocked on to Salah on the outside; with the goal under their belts, Liverpool calmed and almost doubled their lead. He attempted to hit the target first time, but an unfavorable wobble caused the ball to miss.
However, the away team rallied just before halftime, and with three minutes left in the first half, Bowen scored again to maintain his outstanding goal-scoring record.
Lucas Paquetá, anticipating Bowen’s breakaway, sent a lovely lofted ball forward to set up his goal. The No. 20 nodded back to Antonio, who passed to his wide receiver, Vladimr Coufal. Bowen, having gotten through Virgil van Dijk, headed valiantly in off the far post after receiving a touch from him.
Not long after that, Curtis Jones put the ball in the goal but was called offside, and Areola denied Nez to keep the score knotted up at the half.
Salah gave Liverpool the opening opportunity of the second half when he threaded the ball through to Nez, but Nez missed the right post with his shot.
On the other end, Bowen sent a James Ward-Prowse free-kick straight at Alisson, but it was the home team that scored next as the clock ticked past the hour mark.
Mac Allister started the play with a pinpoint pass over the top for Nez, who let the ball bounce off his shoulder and volley it past a hapless Areola.
To try to get back into the game, the Hammers substituted in Mohammed Kudus and Pablo Fornals, with the latter forcing Alisson to make a save with a shot from beyond the box.
Jota scored the game-winning goal for Liverpool with five minutes remaining after Virgil van Dijk headed an Andy Robertson corner back across goal.
