This weekend in the Premier League, Liverpool will host West Ham. The following are the most up-to-date fitness and availability reports from both teams in advance of Saturday’s Anfield showdown.
Liverpool, which has won four of its first five Premier League games this season, will play West Ham United this weekend. Both teams have gotten off to strong starts in 2023/24.
West Ham has been undefeated so far this season, losing only to Manchester City, and they have beaten Brighton convincingly on the road. They started off their Europa League campaign with a victory over Baka Topola of the Serbian SuperLiga midweek.
Due to the Thursday night Europa League encounter, Jürgen Klopp was unable to provide a live injury update at the match’s pre-match news conference.
Trent Alexander-Arnold and Thiago Alcântara were both out with injuries and didn’t play in the victory against LASK (though they may not have played otherwise).
In his press conference a week ago, Klopp remarked of Alexander-Arnold, “He didn’t train with the team once yet and will take a little bit,” suggesting that the full-back may return for West Ham.
There are worse hamstring injuries, but this one didn’t recover any faster than the average hamstring injury takes to heal, which is about two weeks. We are hopeful that he will be able to begin ball training early next week given that he is already running, but we will have to wait and see.
Thiago was jogging, but that was it, according to Klopp. The Spanish forward has failed to play a single minute this season despite hopes of returning for the start of preseason.
While West Ham’s Emerson is expected to start this weekend’s match in place of Aaron Cresswell at left back, West Ham manager David Moyes announced on Thursday that Cresswell departed the match at halftime against Baka Topola due to a muscular ailment.
More importantly, West Ham is counting on Jarrod Bowen to recover from a sickness in time for the match at Anfield. Because of sickness, he did not play in their Europa League match and had not trained all week prior to Moyes’ news conference.
Moyes has everyone else in contention to start on Merseyside save for Edson lvarez, who was banned for the Europa League game (suspensions from the previous season carry over even with a change of club).
