With the addition of Piero Hincapie, Liverpool hopes to fortify their defense.
Piero Hincapie, a highly regarded defender for Bayer Leverkusen, is a target for Liverpool during the next January transfer window.
Spanish news site Fichajes claims that Reds boss Jurgen Klopp has made it a priority to find a new center defender and has his sights set on 21-year-old Hincapie.
The Ecuadorian international was a mainstay in Leverkusen’s starting lineup in the previous campaign, but he is yet to make an appearance this year. But after a stellar 2022–23 campaign, major European teams began to take notice.
The 32-year-old Virgil van Dijk cannot maintain his current level of performance indefinitely. In addition, both Joel Matip and Joe Gomez have been plagued by injuries in recent years, and the Reds seem to view Hincapie as a man who can provide immediate reinforcements for their defense.
The 21-year-old has the rare ability to play both left and right center back. He’ll become better as he plays more matches. It goes without saying that Klopp has the key to the Ecuadorian defender’s potential.
It has been reported that Liverpool is offering €55 million to get him. For that price, the young South American would join the ranks of Van Dijk, Darwin Nunez, and Alisson as Liverpool’s sixth most expensive acquisition ever. This shows how highly regarded Hincapie is by the Premier League’s biggest clubs.
It’s possible that Hincapie will take over permanently.
The absence of Ibrahima Konate due to injury has put a strain on Liverpool’s defense. Joe Gomez is automatically out of the running for starting at center back due to the unavailability of Trent Alexander-Arnold.
Hincapie, at age 21, may make an immediate impact and grow into a key player after seeing success in a prominent European league such as the Bundesliga. Physically gifted and technically adept, he would be a fascinating addition to Klopp’s system.
If Liverpool can sign Hincapie in January, it would be a huge boost for the club. Klopp must evaluate his position at Anfield and demand defensive depth from the owners in order to compete with clubs like Arsenal and Manchester City.
