Goalkeeper Alisson Becker has won the Premier League’s August Save of the Month award.
The award went to Liverpool’s No. 1 for his spectacular save off of Miguel Almiron’s strike in their 2-1 win at St. James’s Park last month.
A 2-0 advantage for the home team might have been conceded if Alisson hadn’t reacted quickly enough to the forward’s shot in the first half.
Liverpool came back from a two-goal deficit with 10 men down to win the game and take home all three points due to a pair of goals from substitute Darwin Nunez.
Save of the Month was voted on, and Alisson came out on top, beating out the likes of Alphonse Areola (West Ham United), Mark Flekken (Brentford), Jose Sa (Wolverhampton Wanderers), Jordan Pickford (Everton), and Guglielmo Vicario (Tottenham Hotspur).
The Brazilian stated, “Thanks – winning an award is always good, feels good,” after he was presented with the honor at the AXA Training Centre.
I don’t believe you can give the team all the credit for this one; it was all your own doing. Similar to a forward who has won Goal of the Month.
“It was even more meaningful because I believe the save kept us alive for three points,” said the goalie.
From Alisson’s point of view, the save “was a lot about reactions,” he explains. I believe you’re in a decent position, and you’re obviously attempting to assess the issue. But the responses were perhaps the most telling.
Almiron’s shot had a lot of force, and there were too many people in front of me to get a good look at the ball. I’m glad I was able to respond in time, get a good hand on the ball, and give it a shot at goal.
The save on Tyneside is just the latest in Alisson’s impressive collection of Premier League saves since joining the Reds in 2018.
He said, “Definitely it will be, I think it will be,” when asked whether it is one of his favorites. Quite a few exist.
The game versus Norwich immediately springs to memory; I can’t recall the season, however. The last one-on-one was a decent one, and a good one at that. Those two are at the top of my list.
