The Premier League’s August Save of the Month title went to Alisson Becker.
The award went to Liverpool’s No. 1 for his spectacular save off of Miguel Almiron’s strike in their 2-1 win at St. James’s Park last month.
In the first half, Alisson made a critical save when he repelled the forward’s shot and scooped away the rebound to save the home team from going up 2-0.
Liverpool came back from a two-goal deficit with 10 men down to win the game and take home all three points due to a pair of goals from substitute Darwin Nunez.
Save of the Month was voted on, and Alisson came out on top, beating out the likes of Alphonse Areola (West Ham United), Mark Flekken (Brentford), Jose Sa (Wolverhampton Wanderers), Jordan Pickford (Everton), and Guglielmo Vicario (Tottenham Hotspur).
“Thanks – winning an award is always good, feels good,” the Brazilian stated as he accepted the medal at the AXA Training Centre.
This is something you did on your own, so don’t give the team all the credit for it. Similar to a forward who has won Goal of the Month.
“It was even more meaningful because I believe the save kept us alive for three points,” said the goalie.
Alisson continued, describing the save from his vantage point: “[It was] a lot about reactions.” I believe you’re in a decent position, and you’re obviously attempting to assess the issue. But the responses were perhaps the most telling.
Almiron’s shot had a lot of force, and there were too many people in front of me to get a good look at the ball. I’m glad I was quick enough to respond, reach out my hand, and give it a shot to save the day.
The save on Tyneside is just the latest in Alisson’s impressive collection of Premier League saves since joining the Reds in 2018.
When asked whether it’s one of his favorites, he confidently predicted, “Definitely it will be, I believe it will be. Some can be found.
The game versus Norwich immediately springs to memory; I can’t recall the season, however. The last one-on-one was a decent one, and a good one at that. Those two are at the top of my list.
