Jurgen Klopp has been dealt another injury worry in the form of Darwin Nunez as Liverpool prepare to return to action away at Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Early on Saturday morning, Klopp’s Liverpool will take on Wolverhampton Wanderers at Molineux in the Premier League.
In both of Uruguay’s World Cup qualifying games this week, Nunez began up front, but he was substituted off at halftime of their loss to Ecuador.
After the game, Uruguayan manager Marcelo Bielsa said that Nunez was substituted off owing to muscle pain.
According to Bielsa, Nunez was taken out of the game early because he was unable to keep up with the team’s press because of the ongoing problem.
Given Liverpool’s aggressive approach, which is predicated mostly on heavy pressing, that will provide Klopp with a dilemma.
After scoring twice off the bench in the Reds’ 2-1 victory against Newcastle United, Nunez replaced Cody Gakpo in the starting lineup for the match against Aston Villa.
Gakpo has been in fine form for the Netherlands this week, scoring in both of their Euro 2024 qualifiers. He is the most probable option to return to the starting lineup.
Diogo Jota also scored to make his case for playing time, with two goals in Portugal’s 9–0 rout of Luxembourg.
Liverpool have lost three more players to international service in South America this week in addition to Nunez’s injury.
Alisson, Alexis Mac Allister, and Luis Diaz were all required to play on Tuesday night for CONMEBOL World Cup qualification, thus their fitness levels will also be evaluated.
Late returns from international obligations on the continent have resulted in several players starting from the bench in recent seasons.
Liverpool would be severely weakened before their return to league play if they lost another three players from the start at least.
After being sent off against Newcastle and having his one-game suspension extended for bad conduct, Virgil van Dijk will be unavailable.
Another defensive duo, Ibrahima Konate and Trent Alexander-Arnold, had to cancel their international meetup owing to injuries.
Alexander-Arnold was taken out with 20 minutes left against Aston Villa before halftime, so he may miss the trip to Wolves while Konate is optimistic of making a comeback.
Although Klopp said that the right back left the game due to a slight hamstring injury, scan results have not been made public, thus Alexander-Arnold’s status is now unknown.
