According to a report from the Spanish sports magazine Mundo Deportivo, Robert Lewandowski’s Barcelona contract contains a provision that allows the club to sever ties with the Polish player if he appears in less than half of Barcelona’s contests in the 2024–25 campaign.
Despite his current slump, Lewandowski is still an important player for the team. In fact, Xavi regards Lewandowski as someone who can mentor the team’s younger players.
However, the former forward for Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund is 35 years old and approaching the end of his playing days.
This could eventually result in decreased playing time, especially in the 2024–25 season, when Barcelona will sign a younger striker in Vitor Roque.
Barcelona will therefore have the option to break the forward’s contract if he ends up appearing in less than 50% of the games in the upcoming season.
Lewandowski has had a significant effect.
Barcelona pulled off a brilliant football coup in the summer of 2022 when they acquired Lewandowski from Bayern Munich for €45 million, with the attacker signing a four-year deal that could have increased to €50 million with add-ons.
Lewandowski’s presence has been nothing short of a seismic upheaval during his brief stay at Barcelona. He scored 35 goals across all competitions, igniting the passion of the crowd with his goal-scoring skills. His role as the lone striker has elevated him during the current season and even earlier into the foundation of Xavi’s tactical construction. Exceptional clause for contract terminationThis story is not, however, set in stone because the future is yet a blank page. The introduction of a new challenger on the squad, along with Ferran Torres’s promising play and Roque’s impending arrival, may cause a slight change in the roster’s dynamics. Up until 2026, when Lewandowski would be 37 years old, the ink on his progressive deal appeared to be a promise, securing the Polish striker’s destiny as a future Barça hero. However, there is an intriguing condition in the small print of this important agreement. The club has the option to terminate the contract, giving them a lifeline, should the striker’s boots not appear on the field in at least half of the games throughout the 2024–25 season. When a new alternative appears on the horizon, the pendulum of decision may swing, adding an element of uncertainty.
