The Uruguayans won 3-1 in Montevideo, and Nunez was a major reason why. The Liverpool player had a strong game, earning comparisons to a “off-road tractor” and assisting on two goals.
The Liverpool forward noted that it was a great start for the Celeste in their World Cup qualifying campaign in his Instagram post after the game.
“We started the playoffs in the best way, winning at home to the joy of everyone,” Nunez said. Your help is much appreciated.
Former Liverpool striker Luis Suarez was one of several notable people to offer their support in the comments.
Despite Valverde’s lack of enthusiasm, something about his “Flying off” remark appeared to resonate with Nunez.
The 24-year-old responded with, “You’re flying, you’re crazy brother,” and a fire emoji.
A ‘crazy’ remark by Valverde about Nunez.
Valverde and Nunez are just two of Uruguay’s many promising young players.
They have gotten off to a good start in qualifying and will be hoping to continue that success all the way to the 2026 World Cup. In that year, both Darwin and Valverde will be just 28 years old.
When that tournament comes along, it will be fascinating to see whether the former is still a Liverpool player.
After a rough 2017 campaign, there were rumors that the Reds may try to cash in on Darwin. It’s a relief, therefore, that Jurgen Klopp no longer considers the Uruguayan to be vulnerable.
There was talk of Nunez’s national teammate Valverde joining him at Liverpool if he decided to remain put.
The Reds were continuously linked to the Real Madrid player during the summer. Some said they tried to contact Valverde via the club in Madrid, but were met with nothing.
The 25-year-old would have been a fantastic acquisition had he been acquired for the estimated £77m sum [Daily Mail]. However, this seems to be impossible at this time. At least he’s going to be seen collaborating with Darwin on a global scale.
