Sept 10 — Saturday, Virgil van Dijk claimed he had learnt “a hard and expensive lesson” after getting an additional one-game suspension and a £100,000 (approximately RM583,000) punishment for his violent response to a red card against Newcastle.
After being sent off in the first half of Liverpool’s 2-1 triumph at St. James’ Park in August for a tackle on Newcastle’s Alexander Isak, the Dutch defender conceded he acted inappropriately.
After first refusing to leave the field and fighting with referee John Brooks while cursing at him, an angry Van Dijk eventually conceded and left the field.

Van Dijk was banned for the 3-0 pre-break victory against Aston Villa due to the club’s obligatory one-game punishment.
The Reds will be playing the Wolves on September 16, but he will not be able to play since he earned another ban on Friday.
“It has been a hard and expensive lesson,” Van Dijk said in a news conference before the Netherlands’ Euro 2024 qualifier on Sunday against the Republic of Ireland in Dublin.
I’m at a loss for words to explain. I’m relieved that it’s over and have come to terms with it.
Moreover, the central defender expressed his hope that the funds would be distributed properly. An altruistic motive is always preferable.
Sunday’s Group B meeting is crucial for Ireland as they are now three points behind the Dutch with one game left played.
