Liverpool has had several noteworthy individual performances in the early season.
The Reds have won three of their first four games, often impressively. Liverpool won comfortably against Aston Villa before the international break thanks to Darwin Nunez’s spectacular comeback at Newcastle, where Jurgen Klopp’s team had been down for much of the game.
Getting three points against Bournemouth and Newcastle with 10 men has raised optimism that the Reds might fight for the crown this season. Ian Doyle’s average ratings for each player in the first four games of the season:Alisson-8
The Brazilian goalkeeper has been Liverpool’s most reliable this season. Against Miguel Almiron at Newcastle, he saved well to help Liverpool draw Chelsea.
Trent Alexander-Arnold—7
Alexander-Arnold excelled against Villa, allowing him to show off his passing skills. Was lucky not to see a second yellow against Newcastle.
Ibrahima Konate—6.5
France international paired Virgil van Dijk in season’s first two games. Konate was anxious against Bournemouth following a more confident performance against Chelsea before his injury.
Van Dijk – 6
The new Liverpool captain was solid alongside Konate despite his blunder that led to Bournemouth’s opening. His early Newcastle red card left the Reds with a mountain to climb.
Andy Robertson—7
Robertson commanded Liverpool’s tenacity at St. James’ Park and his all-around performance versus Villa. Currently the team’s most reliable defender.
Joel Matip | 6.5
Matip replaced Konate and was first targeted by Newcastle’s Anthony Gordon before rising to the task. Improved vs Villa.
Joe Gomez | 7
Van Dijk’s red card let Gomez shine off the bench. Followed up with a clean sheet at Anfield with Matip.
6 Jarrell Quansah
The youthful centre-back has been given early Premier League and Anfield debuts. Will have liked his two cameos.
Alex MacAllister-6.5
Despite a pre-assist against Chelsea, seemed to have teething issues in his first two Liverpool appearances. Showed his holding skills versus Villa.
Dominik Szoboszlai – 8
His debut showed his ability to explode into the box. Excellent against Bournemouth and hard against Newcastle before getting his first Liverpool goal last Sunday.
6 Cody Gakpo
Having trouble making an impression this season. Gakpo has played a more prominent role under Klopp, but his familiarity with the position has been evident.
Harvey Elliott-7
The teenage midfielder has provided a spark off the bench in all four games. Has impressed and maintained his starting XI spot.
Curtis Jones: 6.5
In his first start of the season, May showed composure against Villa despite being worried about his midfield spot after all the summer arrivals.
Wataru Endo—5.5
The Japan captain wanted to start his Liverpool career better. Nervous against Bournemouth and bad against Newcastle.
Mohamed Salah—7.5
Salah scored two goals and provided two assists in his first four games despite speculation over his future during the transfer window. Has coupled will with Nunez and his high standards may explain his low rating.
Luis Diaz-7
Diaz scored in the club’s first two games, a great start. Has made blunders in four games but contributed.
Darwin Nunez -8
He won the hearts of Newcastle with his exploits. After a great start against Villa, started poorly against Chelsea.
