Overcoming Ronaldo and Harry Kane, McTominay became the player who scored the most goals in European qualifying

As Scotland neared winning a spot at the 2019 European Championship, Scott McTominay passed Cristiano Ronaldo and Harry Kane as the joint top scorer in qualifying.

On a night when Lamine Yamal became the youngest player to score for Spain — and also the youngest player to score in a European qualifier — in a 7-1 win against Georgia, McTominay continued his improbable goal spree as the Scots extended their 100% record in Group A by defeating Cyprus 3-0.

McTominay, a midfielder for Manchester United, scored his sixth goal in the Euro 2024 qualifying process as Scotland maintained its lead over Spain with a maximum of 15 points following five straight victories.

To guarantee its attendance in the event, which will be staged in Germany, Scotland needs two more points.

In terms of goals scored, McTominay is tied for first place with his new United teammate Rasmus Hojlund of Denmark and his old colleague Romelu Lukaku of Belgium.

Kane and Ronaldo both have five goals.

With one assist, McTominay has also contributed to more goals than any other player during qualification.

He gave Scotland’s head coach Steve Clarke credit for his goal streak.

McTominay stated, “The manager allows me a lot of leeway to get in the box and possibly make things happen. “I just want to give back to him since he has shown a lot of faith in me.

“My job and the job of the team is to make the people of Scotland happy, and I think we’re doing it well right now,” he said.
