In the summer of 2015, Liverpool was prepared to trade star striker Darwin Nunez to Barcelona for star attacker Joao Felix.
During the summer transfer window, Liverpool considered acquiring Joao Felix, a player on loan from Barcelona, to serve as a replacement for Darwin Nunez. Though Felix was invited to join the group he frequents most, he politely declined.
The Portuguese was reportedly evaluated by the Reds for a potential trade involving one of their attackers, according to the Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo. They claim that a trade involving Nunez, a 24-year-old striker for Liverpool, was mooted.
Man United and Al Hilal were both interested in signing the Atletico Madrid forward, but it seems that he had his heart set on moving to Barcelona instead. To make his “dream” move to Barcelona a reality, he turned down bids from every single one of the aforementioned clubs, including Liverpool.
Since the Uruguayan striker, Nunez, has begun scoring vital goals, replacing him with Felix makes less sense.
The former Chelsea loanee was probably never really evaluated by Liverpool as a substitute for anybody on the team. While his skill is undeniable—Jurgen Klopp has even praised him—the fact is that Liverpool already has better options.
After underwhelming stints at Atletico and Chelsea, Felix is no longer seen as a desirable acquisition. Nunez, on the other hand, has had a productive summer and an encouraging start to the season with Liverpool. The club is not expected to replace him after just a year at Anfield.
The South American superstar may be competing with others for a starting berth for the Red, but his recent performance against Newcastle showed that he still has an important role to play. Liverpool’s apparent interest in making a move sounds more like a Spanish newspaper praising Barcelona’s new player than an actual transfer request from the Reds.
