Barcelona’s already-excellent midfield was bolstered this summer by the additions of Ilkay Gundogan and Oriol Romeu. After all, in Pedri, Gavi, and Frenkie de Jong, the Catalans already had the services of some of the world’s top.
In a typical 4-3-3 formation, having six midfielders would be too many players. However, Xavi’s tactics include four midfielders, with Gavi operating on the left flank, allowing for maximum participation from all players.
Robert Lewandowski has called for a more traditional 4-3-3 formation with three strikers dedicated only to scoring goals.
Xavi has no chance against Gavi.
Gavi would be the one to leave the field for a more offensive player in this scenario. In a strict 4-3-3 formation, it is likely that Ferran Torres or Joao Felix would play there.
SPORT, though, claims that Gavi is the manager’s most valuable asset. Since Xavi considers his four-midfielder formation to be crucial to the team’s steadiness, he has no plans to alter it.
In theory, the addition of a natural winger would help the Blaugranas play more offensively and as a unit in the final third.
If a third striker is to be added, Gavi would seem to be the odd man out, what with de Jong’s hot streak, Gundogan’s stellar start to the season, and Romeu’s central role as the team’s backbone.
Xavi, meanwhile, is not even considering replacing the 19-year-old’s spot in the starting lineup.
The youngster’s zeal, defensive contribution, and goal-scoring eye have all been praised by Barcelona’s head coach.
A significant achievement
Gavi played in his 100th game for Barcelona in all competitions in Tuesday night’s match against Osasuna at El Sadar. In fact, he just became the sport’s youngest ever player to accomplish this feat.
The La Masia product has been instrumental in the team’s development, starting 79 games and appearing in 100 overall.
The teenager may find success upon Pedri’s return from injury, despite the Canary Islander’s obvious superiority. In addition, it would be hard to see anybody replacing Oriol Romeu, Gundogan, or de Jong.
Gavi’s current market worth is €90 million, and he will be a regular starter for the foreseeable future. He wants to make the most of his opportunities.
