It was the first time since March/April 2015 that Liverpool had a player sent off in consecutive Premier League games, leaving Jurgen Klopp’s squad with a huge hill to climb at St. James Park.
Nunez’s third brace for Liverpool helped them come back from a halftime deficit.
Shortly before the final buzzer, the Uruguayan tied the game and then scored the game-winning goal in the third minute of overtime.
The 24-year-old secure all three points, but also set a Premier League record with his game-winning goal in stoppage time.
Liverpool now holds the record for most late-game goals in Premier League history, with 42 thanks to Nunez’s game-winner.
The 13-game winning streak Klopp achieved against Eddie Howe was the longest ever by a manager in Premier League history, setting another record for the day.
Liverpool’s manager said after the game that the thrilling triumph was unlike any other in his coaching tenure.
Liverpool’s undefeated record against Newcastle now stands at 14 games, dating all the way back to December 2015.
Having enjoyed an unbeaten start to the season, the Merseyside club are sitting in fourth position after three matches.
They’ll be playing Aston Villa at home on Sunday, their last game before the international break.
