Erling Haaland, Kevin De Bruyne, and John Stones have all been selected as finalists for the Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) Players’ Player of the Year award in recognition of their outstanding achievements throughout the 2022–23 season.
City won the UEFA Super Cup by defeating Sevilla on penalties.
They are part of a six-person shortlist that also includes Harry Kane (formerly of Tottenham Hotspur), Martin Degaard, and Bukayo Saka (both of Arsenal), who were all crucial to City’s historic Treble victory.
Haaland broke the previous record for the most goals scored in a single Premier League season in 2022–23 by scoring 36 goals in just 35 games. His 44 goal contributions were tied for the highest in history, surpassing Thierry Henry, a former Arsenal striker, who had previously set the record in the 2002–03 campaign.
After joining from Borussia Dortmund, he scored an amazing 52 goals in all competitions in his debut season, sparking English football.
De Bruyne, a midfielder for Belgium, strengthened his reputation as one of the greatest players in soccer history by tallying 10 goals and an amazing 31 assists.
If De Bruyne were to receive the award, he would become the first three-time winner after winning successive awards in 2019–20 and 2020–21.
Stones furthered his reputation as one of the most imposing footballers in the world by having his best season while wearing a City jersey to date. He frequently played in a hybrid defense-midfield position and brought a fresh element to City’s tactical scheme.
The winner will be announced on August 29 during the PFA’s 50th anniversary of its awards ceremony.
The 92 English clubs that compete in the Premier League and Football League voted for the PFA honors.
Everyone at City has congratulated Erling, Kevin, and John on being selected as finalists for the award.
