At Old Trafford, Man Utd overcame a 3-0 deficit to defeat Nottingham Forest 3-2, but the performance raised more concerns than it did answers.
Bruno Fernandes’ penalty appeared to have gone in the net when Casemiro turned his back on the goal that Manchester United was attempting to score and knelt down on his haunches to witness the Stretford End’s response.
When the audience exploded, Casmiro jumped up and pumped his hands, letting the emotion associated with being let out of prison loose. United finally had cause to celebrate at the conclusion of a terrible week. Even though it wasn’t convincing, the outcome was sorely needed.
There have been many gloomy days here during the past ten years, but none of them had such a disastrous beginning. After a turbulent week for the team both on and off the field, United would have welcomed a return to playing football. Until at least 3:04 PM.The earliest they have ever found themselves two goals behind in Premier League history was at that point, when they trailed Forest by two goals. It felt appropriate when the clouds broke shortly after, the rain falling over the groaning roof of the Sir Bobby Charlton stand, a reminder that neglect can often be seen all around the area. They say it never rains, but it pours.Taiwo Awoniyi scored within of 90 seconds due to United’s excessive aggression, which allowed a counterattack to start from their own corner. The second goal could be attributed to their carelessness because Casemiro failed to do enough to clear Morgan Gibbs-White’s cross before it hit Willy Boly and went into the bottom corner after Diogo Dalot gave away a cheap free kick.Chaos reigned in the opposing end while confusion reigned throughout the rest of Old Trafford. To United’s credit, they were able to regroup, but the afternoon raised more questions than it did answers.Marcus Rashford breezed past Serge Aurier, and Christian Eriksen was there to turn the cross home. United likely needed a quick response after the tumultuous start, and they got it. Mason Mount and Eriksen should be competing for the starting position when Mount is healthy, based on what he showed here.United didn’t finish the comeback until the second half, with Fernandes at its center. Casemiro scored the equalizer off of his creative free kick, then he slammed home the penalty after Danilo fouled Rashford and reduced Forest to ten men.For United, who are more than a little fortunate to have won two of their opening three games of the season, it seemed like another uninspired day. Again, they were occasionally too open, and Forest might have thought they deserved more goals than two. They didn’t have as many shots as Wolves had here two weeks ago, but they nonetheless appeared dangerous. In the upcoming season, many better teams than those two will visit Old Trafford, therefore the hosts cannot be as kind as they appear to be right now. While Casemiro’s goal benefited United, he is still occasionally left exposed at the base of the midfield and frequently caught too far up the field. before left-back, Diogo Dalot appeared vulnerable, and Raphael Varane’s injury exit before halftime may have dealt them yet another injury setback in a season that is currently almost entirely defined by them.On the plus side, United has now found a forward threat. They scored three goals and had a winning attitude throughout the entire game. But there needs to be a balance. This team cannot keep encouraging opponent teams like Wolves and Nottingham Forest as they have been doing. Despite the fact that this was a crucial victory, work remains.
