When the 2023 NFL regular season starts, Patrick Mahomes will be prepared to defend his Super Bowl victory. But the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback seemed to want to forgo one preseason practice.
To get down to 53 players by Tuesday, NFL teams must make dozens of roster reductions in the following days. Recently, Mahomes disclosed that he doesn’t focus too much on the roster bubble players.
“I’m rooting for everybody,” said Mahomes, via Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk.
“It’s hard to sit there and you don’t want to promote for one guy to make it over another guy because this is people’s livelihoods, this is people’s lives. … I like all the guys in the locker room, it’s hard to see guys, even if it’s for a moment, their dreams kind of get cut right there so it definitely is a hard day for everybody in this league.”
The Chiefs player said that he would want Brett Veach and Andy Reid, the team’s general manager and head coach, to make those decisions without his input. Mahomes said he has complete faith in the Chiefs’ coaching staff to make the best choices for the team.
Mahomes trusts Reid and Veach to assemble the team, but the two-time MVP does have one alteration in mind that he hopes the Chiefs brass will take into account.
