Liverpool’s Tricky Dilemma: Klopp Forced to Make a Critical Decision Regarding Darwin Nunez

Liverpool started their home Premier League season on Saturday by defeating Bournemouth after falling behind.

An early goal from Antoine Semenyo was quickly wiped out by goals from Luis Diaz and Mohamed Salah, and Diogo Jota scored after the Reds were reduced to 10 men as a result of Alexis MacAllister’s red card.

When Liverpool visits Newcastle United the following Sunday, they’ll look to land an early blow on one of their top-four rivals.

We now look ahead to potential changes Jurgen Klopp might make when his team resumes play.

Van Dijk as an illustration

It was very much a tale of two halves for the Liverpool defense on Saturday against Bournemouth, with a poor first half and a much better second half.

Virgil van Dijk led by example as captain and was assisted by Ibrahima Konate. The two were clearly superior to Joe Gomez and Joel Matip.

Gomez, on the other hand, was a weekend substitute at right-back and will be ready to take over if Trent Alexander-Arnold is unable to recuperate from the injury that forced him off the field since Conor Bradley is still out. In the left back position, Andy Robertson improved against Bournemouth and keeps the advantage over Kostas Tsimikas, while Alisson Becker, who has Caoimhin Kelleher and Adrian behind him, showed why he is the best goalkeeper in the world.

The headache Mac Allister had has passed.

Despite an appeal against Mac Allister’s dismissal, just as Klopp was getting more options in the middle of the field, Allister was lost.

Mac Allister had once again started at number six, but with Wataru Endo, a recent addition, playing the final 30 minutes and Stefan Bajcetic, who had been absent for nearly five months, returning to the bench, Liverpool now has a lot of choices.

Though Thiago Alcantara wasn’t even close to being ready for the matchday squad, Klopp will be hopeful that the ankle injury that kept Curtis Jones from playing on Saturday wasn’t serious.

Dominik Szoboszlai made his debut at home and has already earned a spot in the starting lineup, while Harvey Elliott once more dazzled in a late appearance. On the other hand, Cody Gakpo struggled once more after being put in an impromptu midfield position. Another choice is the young person James McConnell.

Gakpo Posé

The fact that Luis Diaz, Diogo Jota, and Mohamed Salah all scored against Bournemouth and put in a tremendous second-half effort hints that some shifting may be necessary, but Liverpool now have the flexibility to mix and match their forward options.

On the other side, Gakpo impressively led the line for the majority of the second half of the previous campaign and scored against Newcastle in February. Darwin Nunez scored at St. James’ Park as well, and given that Klopp has only started two of Liverpool’s previous 12 games, he might elect to start at least one of the pair in the front three, either on the left or the center, depending on Diaz’s fitness.

Ben Doak, a teenager, went back on the bench at the weekend to provide cover for Salah on the right.
