As Lionel Messi and his colleagues showered manager Tata Martino with a bottle of champagne after winning the Leagues Cup final on Saturday night, David Beckham joined Inter Miami players in their celebrations from inside the team’s locker room.
Just hours after the team edged Nashville in what was a tense and dramatic penalty shootout at Geodis Park in Tennessee, Inter Miami’s official X account wrote in Spanish that “Today is celebrated” and included a video of players having a ball.
Along with Messi, Miami’s left-back Jordi Alba, defensive midfielder Victor Ulloa, and star striker Josef Martinez could all be seen blowing the cork on the champagne while donning ski masks to protect their eyes from any spray.
The Leagues Cup stood proudly amidst the alcohol on a table inside the dressing area, along with a few buckets of American beer called Coors Light.
The crucial trio of Inter Miami players and members of the Barcelona contingent, Messi, Alba, and Sergio Busquets, who all joined the team earlier this summer, stopped by to take a group photo with the 48-year-old Beckham, who co-owns the Herons with Jorge Mas.
The former England captain knelt down next to Messi while clutching the Leagues Cup while dressed in a navy blue suit and tie. Even when posing alongside Busquets and Alba, the World Cup winner had Beckham, 48, by the arm. The Miami team’s locker room was also blasting reggaeton music while the players filled the Leagues Cup trophy with beer and had a good time. When Martinez, Ulloa, and other players arrived at the post-game news conference in full voice and with numerous bottles of champagne to shower their manager, Tata Martino was caught off guard as he was responding to questions from reporters. Martino stood up from his chair and gave Martinez a wet hug. Right-back DeAndre Yedlin was also seen enjoying a laugh with colleagues. When it was time to depart Tennessee for South Florida, the Leagues Cup trophy was eventually sealed in a black case and loaded onto Inter Miami’s private plane. Goalkeeper Drake Callendar, who won the game on Saturday night and gave Inter Miami its first championship in five years after saving two of the club’s penalty kicks, was seen posing for pictures with the trophy before the team’s flight. Messi has already scored 10 goals in seven games for his new team, which has a 5-14-3 record and now occupies the bottom spot in the MLS Eastern Conference. Inter Miami, which is currently on a seven-match winning streak, will take on Cincinnati in the US Open Cup, another domestic cup competition in the US.
