Remarkably Talented: Barcelona’s Youngest Player Amazes on Full Debut

Lamine Yamal, Barcelona’s youngest-ever player, left fans amazed during his first full debut for the club. The prodigious talent, just 15 years, nine months, and 16 days old, made his mark as a substitute against Real Betis on April 29, 2023, registering a shot on target during his brief seven-minute appearance.

Breaking records once again, the Spain U19 international became the youngest player to start a La Liga game in the 21st century, at a tender age of 16 years and 38 days. His remarkable performance unfolded in Barcelona’s 2-0 La Liga victory over Cadiz on Sunday, August 20.

A product of Barcelona’s La Masia academy, Yamal showcased his immense potential on his debut start for the team, coming tantalizingly close to scoring his first goal for the club. The future holds great promise for this young winger.

The teenager’s inclusion in the lineup was significantly influenced by the suspension of former Leeds United winger Raphinha, who received a red card during Barcelona’s goalless draw with Getafe on the opening day.

However, Yamal appeared entirely comfortable and left fans raving about his remarkable full debut on Twitter. One fan expressed, “Lamine Yamal is an absolute joy to watch. This kid’s talent is astonishing.”

Yamal occupied the right side of Xavi’s four-man midfield, alongside Oriol Romeu from former Chelsea and Southampton, and ex-Manchester City standout Ilkay Gundogan. Notably, Frenkie De Jong, a target for Manchester United, was deployed as a center-back.

In his momentous full debut, the 16-year-old came close to netting a goal. Yamal deftly dispossessed a Cadiz defender inside the box, then unleashed a low, curling shot towards the far corner. Yet, a remarkable save by Cadiz goalkeeper Jeremias Ledesma thwarted his effort.

Barcelona’s first half was characterized by frustration as Cadiz’s robust defense kept the score level at the break.

A late goal from Pedri, less than 10 minutes from the final whistle, propelled Barcelona ahead, and Ferran Torres sealed their victory in injury time, securing all three points for the Catalan side.

This match also marked Barcelona’s debut at their temporary home, Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys, where they’ll play until at least the 2025/2026 season while the Camp Nou undergoes redevelopment.
