Mason Mount, a recent addition to Manchester United, is assuming a more significant role than he has in the past, but Erik ten Hag is certain that he can succeed in it.
In the Red Devils’ Premier League debut against Wolves on Monday, Mount was inserted right into the starting lineup despite the team’s struggles to reach its best form. The game ended 1-0 in favor of the home team at Old Trafford.
Bruno Fernandes was playing ahead of Mount in a midfield three, but the central midfield position is deeper than what Mount has typically played for Chelsea or England.
Ten Hag believes that the Englishman will need some time to get used to the slightly different demands of the job, but he is confident that the 24-year-old will succeed.
Ten Hag remarked, “I think he can [play deeper].” We have already witnessed that throughout the preseason, but as I previously stated, we must improve not only many aspects of our game but also the way we set up the midfield and cooperate with one another.
“I’m sure we’ll get it [right], but it won’t happen overnight, and [if] it were simpler, anyone could do it,” the speaker asserts.
Ten Hag claims that Christian Eriksen, who was signed during the summer and asked to play deeper than he was used to, behind Fernandes, provided evidence just last season that it could be done.Ten Hag remarked, “Christian Eriksen last season came in and had the same.” For the first time in his life, he had a more significant role, one that involved both Mason’s and Christian’s ambitions. Therefore, he desires to be more versatile. That is how I view football, but as I said, it won’t happen right away. Although there is a procedure we must follow, he is incredibly game-smart.He is technically gifted and has excellent ball vision. He is adept at handling the ball. Don’t overlook the dynamics he possesses. He possesses the mindset. As a result, everything is in place to make it happen.
