Barcelona midfielder ranked 4th in UEFA Player of the Year 2022/23.

As the Football Awards season approaches, UEFA has unveiled the contenders for the 2022/23 Player of the Year award. Lionel Messi, an icon at Barcelona, is among the top three finalists, accompanied by Manchester City’s Erling Haaland and Kevin De Bruyne.

Additionally, Ilkay Gundogan, a recent addition to Barcelona, secured an impressive fourth place in the UEFA Player of the Year ranking for the same season. His position comes ahead of notable players such as Kylian Mbappe, Luka Modric, Rodri, and Declan Rice.

Gundogan’s recognition is well-deserved due to his influential role at Manchester City, where he played a vital part in their triumphant Premier League, UEFA Champions League, and FA Cup campaign last season.

During his time with Guardiola’s team, the German international participated in 51 matches across various competitions, contributing with 11 goals and seven assists. Among these performances was a decisive two-goal effort that secured victory against Manchester United in the FA Cup final.

Following his historic achievements with Manchester City, Gundogan decided to embark on a new journey with Barcelona. He joined the La Liga champions as a free agent, having concluded his contract with Etihad Stadium. His commitment to Barcelona encompasses a two-year contract, with the possibility of extending it for an additional twelve months.

As he begins his tenure in Catalonia, the seasoned superstar is anticipated to play a pivotal role in Xavi’s strategic plans. Both the player and the club hold aspirations of replicating the success he achieved with Manchester City in the previous season.
