Recapping Chelsea’s Eventful Transfer Window Under Boehly’s Leadership

Todd Boehly is about to invest close to £1 billion on Chelsea-related transactions.

Boehly quickly spent the £4.25 billion he had recently paid to buy Chelsea when the transfer window opened in May 2022.

Long-term contracts were signed by nine players for Stamford Bridge, and in January, eight more A-listers relocated to West London.

Following the revelation of Moises Caicedo’s departure, another nine new faces have been revealed for this summer, and the expensive spending frenzy shows no signs of abating.

A new British transfer record is set by the Blues’ eye-watering £115 million payment to Brighton for Caicedo.

Although add-ons could raise the sum to £110 million, it surpasses their previous record, which they set in January when they paid £106 million to Benfica for Enzo Fernandez.

The other top signings over the previous year, again taking into account future add-ons to counterbalance the initial outlays, are Christopher Nkunku (£56 million), Marc Cucurella (£62 million), Wesley Fofana (£75 million), Mykhailo Mudryk (£88 million), and Raheem Sterling (£47.5 million).

Nicolas Jackson, a rookie goal scorer named Axel Disasi, cost £30 million, while Benoit Badiashile, Noni Madueke, Kalidou Koulibaly, and Malo Gusto each cost £35 million. Malo Gusto cost $30.7 million.

The Blues paid £25 million for the Brighton goalkeeper Robert Sanchez, and Edouard Mendy and Kepa Arrizabalaga both left the team.

Andrey Santos ($11 million), David Fofana ($10.5 million), Angela Gabriel ($13 million), Lesley Ugochukwu ($23.5 million), Carney Chukwuemeka ($20 million), Cesare Casadei ($12 million), Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang ($12 million), and Gabriel Slonina ($12.6 million) were among the players who requested eight figure transfer fees.

Jimmy-Jay Morgan (£6 million), Ishe Samuels-Smith (£4 million), free agents Alex Matos, Omari Hutchinson, and Diego Moreira have all joined the Chelsea youth team to complete the 26 permanent hires made under the Boehly era prior to Caicedo.

The Jamaican attacker will be joined by Dujuan Richards of Phoenix Academy when he turns 18 in October.

Romeo Lavia, who chose Chelsea over a £50 million deal to Liverpool, is also anticipated to team up with Caicedo and Fernandez in midfield.

It will boost Chelsea’s spending under Boehly to £956.8 million, even if they had looked into leaving Stamford Bridge.

Fofana, Gabriel, Slonina, and Hutchinson are the other forwards on loan this season; Koulibaly and Aubameyang have already been sold.

Chelsea has already spent $93.2 million on new players in just three transfer windows, and winning the race to sign Romeo Lavia would bring them further closer to the record.

Although stars like Mateo Kovacic, Kai Havertz, and Mason Mount left the team, the club nevertheless gained £1.2 billion in sales in 2013–14, including £208 million this past season.

PAY THE PRICE?

Boehly’s toy store spending, meanwhile, hasn’t persuaded rival supporters that it would translate into success on the field.

The new Mauricio Pochettino club drew 1-1 with Liverpool on the opening weekend of the new season and has a favorable schedule despite not playing in any European tournament this year.

A joker on Twitter, however, wrote that “12th position still awaits them.”

Someone else said, “This is simply insane. It would be a shame if they didn’t end up winning every trophy this year.

The third individual continued, “They now have to win the league to justify that amount of investment, as if City or anyone else won, we would all be saying the same. There are no excuses; either you win the league or you don’t.

The fourth individual who commented just said, “This is ridiculous.”
