Due to their red cards in last Sunday’s La Liga opener against Getafe, the Competition Committee of La Liga decided on Wednesday to suspend manager Xavi Hernández of Barcelona and forward Raphinha for two games each.
The punishments are in accordance with the league’s code of conduct, which stipulates that physical behavior by players when the ball is not in play and coaches who vehemently object to the referee or any of his assistants will also result in a two-game penalty. The Committee determined that Xavi and Raphinha both fell under those guidelines and needed to be suspended from at least two games apiece.
The Blaugrana will be without their coach and starting right winger for this weekend’s home opener against Cádiz at the Montjuic Olympic Stadium as well as for the trip to El Madrigal to face Quique Setién’s Villarreal the following weekend. Barça will appeal the two decisions, but there is very little expectation that they will be overturned. In order to replace Raphinha, Ez Abde, Lamine Yamal, Ferran Torres, and Ansu Fati will all compete for a spot in the starting XI. Xavi’s brother, Scar Hernández, will take over as head coach.
