When asked if the season opener was what Liverpool hoped for, they said it was.

Intense and swift in the face of formidable foes; yes. It was about as difficult as we had anticipated, given how challenging it is to play at Stamford Bridge. There’s no guilt in conceding a point when your team had a chance to win the game but ultimately settled for a tie.


What happened after the first twenty-five minutes, when the Reds were in control?

A goal is disallowed, and then they score, which obviously alters the outcome of the game. The energy and momentum here changed, and they were able to take command of the situation from there. There was a turning point in the game, I believe, when we all realized that it was more important to avoid losing than to strive for the win. It was, therefore, make sure defensively we’re solid, we work on it as a team, and there’s no shame in playing for the point at a certain stage, even if we kept attacking and wanted to attempt to win it.

The day’s defensive performance in the face of intense pressure…


They probed us with questions, attacked with skilled personnel, and sought to weaken us, but I believe we held our ground admirably. In particular, I was impressed by the two central defenders and how they handled the opposition’s attacking line. Because of the strategy and the way we play, they are often left exposed, but they handled it well and were always able to cover.

With the expectation that Liverpool will get better with each match…


Most definitely. There are always kinks to iron out and ways to improve after the first game of the season. Today, things are exactly the same. We played well enough to earn a respectable result; there are, of course, many areas in which we can improve, but we can also use this as a springboard to further success when we return home the following week.
