Harry Maguire has been warned by ERIK TEN HAG to go if he doesn’t want to fight for his position.
On personal grounds, Maguire’s £30 million transfer from Manchester United to West Ham has delayed.
His contract reduces his weekly pay from £190,000 to £120,000, and United has offered him a payoff of £6 million to help make up the difference in his contract.
Even though Maguire has cut a dejected figure since losing the captaincy earlier this summer, there is still no agreement.
The player must now fully commit to United or leave, according to boss Ten Hag.
“For Harry, that is exactly how I described it,” remarked Ten Hag. He has to contend for a position.
He is the best for England, so why shouldn’t he be the best for us? But he needs to demonstrate that he is a world-class center-back.
“He must leave when he lacks the courage to fight. He will then need to decide, but I am satisfied with his choice.
Maguire will play in the opening Premier League game against Wolves at home today.
Ten Hag’s ability to field two potent teams when they played twice on consecutive days during the preseason was demonstrated.
The manager also encourages players who did not start tonight to compete to make the regular starting XI.
“We don’t have an 11-player squad, and last year proved we absolutely need all the players,” he stated.
The necessity for high-level players who may not be starting now but who could do so in the future necessitates an internal struggle for positions among the players.
When a player is good, they will all get their turn in the game, but nobody can play every game, therefore the best squad is ultimately revealed.
“In the squad right now, every position is vacant, and every player has a chance to compete for a spot.
The players decide whether they get more or less playing time.
Rasmus Hojlund, a £72 million new striker who is still getting fit after sustaining a minor injury during preseason with his now-former club Atalanta, will not be playing tonight.
We’re not rushing, Ten Hag declared. We are certain that the position is filled without him and that our staff is strong.
“He needs to reach the appropriate level of fitness before we can include him in practice and bring him in for the games.
“So we go slowly. It is more important to win over the long run than it is to win right now.
United, in Ten Hag’s opinion, are also prepared to triumph.
The Red Devils reached the FA Cup final, won the Carabao Cup, and qualified for the Champions League last season after finishing third. They also won their first trophy in six years.
Ten Hag, who assumed over in July 2022, added: “We couldn’t have predicted this, given where we are now, looking back a year.
“We demonstrated that we could defeat all top-tier international teams.
“We have a great solid basis, but we still need to work on it and keep working at it.
We will be more successful if we work hard, put the correct plan and efforts in place, and work consistently. We can take that step.
