Ibrahim Sangare, a star at PSV, is being watched by Liverpool.

Liverpool has expressed an interest in acquiring Ibrahim Sangare, a midfielder currently playing for PSV Eindhoven. The 25-year-old international from Ivory Coast is a versatile midfielder who excels largely as a defender.

Kiki Musampa, whose brother is Sangare’s agent, claims as much. As Chelsea held the Reds to a 1-1 tie, it became quite evident that we had some serious midfielding needs. Here is what Musampa revealed to ESPN via ECHO.

“Some major clubs, like Bayern Munich, are showing interest. Both Paris Saint-Germain and Liverpool have Ibrahim on their radar, although he is not currently a top priority for either club. The offer provided by Nottingham Forest was not satisfactory.

Even if some people haven’t heard of Sangare before, his influence is sure to grow. The circumstances at Liverpool is such that even at age 41, Xabi Alonso can compete favorably with the other midfielders for the Reds. The former Toulouse player had been of interest to Nottingham Forest. However, PSV’s monetary requirements thwarted their efforts.

Against Chelsea, the team’s lack of Fabinho and Jordan Henderson was painfully obvious on the field. The importance of filling this critical void grows as the transfer deadline approaches.

Without Fabinho’s leadership, our midfield lacked the protection that he usually gives to our defense. His ability to stymie opponent offensive drives, pick off passes, and control the flow of games was greatly missed. Similarly, without Henderson’s leadership and structure, our midfield was exposed, and our opponents capitalized despite our otherwise excellent defensive unit.

The difficulties we encountered in our first game of the season highlighted the need for a defender/attacker who can help us block shots and deflect balls away from our goal.

Without the correct defensive midfielder, our creative players would be stifled by the constant fear of defensive flaws, preventing them from reaching their full potential. Only time will tell if such player is Sangare.
