Major Transfer Alert: Neymar Back to FC Barcelona?

According to a report by SPORT, Neymar has reached an agreement to rejoin FC Barcelona. The Catalan newspaper revealed that Paris Saint-Germain is open to letting the forward return to the club he left in 2017 for a record-breaking €222 million ($244 million) fee.

Neymar has expressed his desire to leave PSG, as stated by L’Equipe. Moreover, new head coach Luis Enrique and sporting director Luis Campos have reportedly excluded him from their plans for the upcoming 2023/2024 season, according to RMC Sport.

While Neymar’s salary, listed at $50 million on Forbes’ The World’s Highest-Paid Athletes list, presents a financial challenge due to Financial Fair Play constraints, SPORT later indicated that he could receive €12 million ($13.1 million) upon his return to the Blaugrana fold.

On Friday, the publication disclosed that Neymar has indeed accepted the prospect of reuniting with the club he joined from his childhood team Santos in 2013. This confirmation comes as he has given his approval to the proposed reduced salary package.

The only remaining detail to be sorted out is Neymar’s departure from PSG.

Given Barcelona’s financial constraints, it’s unlikely they can meet PSG’s reported asking price ranging between €60-150 million for the Brazilian forward.

A more plausible scenario is Neymar signing with one of the Saudi clubs under the government-backed Public Investment Fund. Al-Hilal has already emerged as a potential option, with the likelihood of him then being loaned to Barcelona for a minimum of a year.

All parties involved appear to be in consensus regarding this operation, currently under discussion with the involvement of Barça president Joan Laporta’s close associate and Neymar’s representative, Pini Zahavi.

While some sources, such as UOL Esporte, have mentioned the possibility of rescinding Neymar’s contract, it’s unlikely since PSG would only agree to such termination if he relinquishes the remaining money in his deal – something Neymar is unlikely to do.

Opting for the Saudi route seems to be a win-win situation. PSG receives a transfer fee and reduces costs on Neymar’s contract, while the player himself stands to receive a lucrative sum in the Middle East.

This move also fulfills Neymar’s desire for a return to Barcelona, allowing the La Liga champions to promptly benefit from the addition of one of the world’s top players, assuming he maintains his form and stays injury-free.
