UPDATE: Liverpool still considering bid for ‘aggressive’ defender after remove Joe Gomez

Liverpool is still interested in signing Torino center-back Perr Schuurs this summer.

Schuurs’ name has been mentioned frequently as the Reds look for a defensive addition. However, no real steps appear to have been taken as of yet.

This is supported by a report published today in the Italian newspaper Calciomercato. They report that Torino have not received any bids for the 23-year-old since Crystal Palace’s £26 million bid was rejected.

However, this does not indicate that no offers are being prepared. Liverpool and West Ham United are cited as two clubs who’remain in the hunt’ for Schuurs.

Torino are allegedly reluctant to lose the player who finished as their top scorer last season. However, if a bid of roughly £34 million is made, President Urbano Cairo is said to be willing to let the Dutchman go.

Liverpool will not give up on Schuurs

So far, Liverpool’s search for a replacement center-back has been concentrated on left-sided defenders.

Jurgen Klopp really needs someone who can fit into his new system as a left centre-back/full-back.

Schuurs is not the right candidate for the post if that is what Jurgen wants. The former Ajax defender plays with his right foot.

However, that alone should not be used to discount the links. Schuurs had previously expressed interest in Liverpool, and in 2018 he even went on trial there. Since then, he has repeatedly shown up as a transfer target for the Reds.

He is categorized as a “aggressive” defender by Target Scouting, and he would provide some youth and vigor to a backline that has started to lack both.

Liverpool may need to move quickly if they want Schuurs. Journalist Fabrizio Romano claims that West Ham has lots of Declan Rice money leftover and that Tottenham Hotspur is interested in him.

The Reds have plenty to think about after apparently pulling out of an agreement to recruit Micky van de Ven due to a comparable cost. This is still one to keep an eye on.
