Considering that Eden Hazard is still a free agent and has no interest in signing a contract, the startling total cost of his miserable time at Real Madrid has been made public today.
The forward joined Real Madrid in 2019 after leaving Chelsea and quickly established himself as a star in the Premier League. But with his staggering £130 million price tag overall, he had to get going in Spain right once.
Instead, Hazard found it difficult to stand out at the Bernabeu and found himself slipping down the pecking order before mutually agreeing to end his contract.
The 32-year-old has been criticized as one of Madrid’s “worst ever signings” and a “ruinous” superstar by Sport due to a streak of ailments, incidents of reporting to preseason overweight, and stuttering performances on the field.
The same magazine has also called attention to the staggering overall expenditure Madrid was compelled to make on Hazard despite his disastrous time at the Bernabeu.
Hazard received a salary of €23.2 million (£20 million), per Salary Sport. Thus, before leaving, he would have amassed €92.8 million (£ 80 million) for his full pay.
More specifically, Madrid paid him over €36 million (£31 million) for each goal.
Hazard only managed to score seven goals and hand out 12 assists in 76 appearances for the team, thus he is still a free agent this summer.
Sport reports that Hazard’s decision to retire, who was once among the most lethal players in the world, was ‘unthinkable’ just a few seasons ago.
However, he is at a crossroads with an unknown future because no offers are on the table.
Hazard explained his predicament to a small Belgian television station in June, adamant that “my body can take it” and that “I’m still capable of being a professional footballer.”
Hazard is rumored to be considering quitting football completely after failing to impress his teammates at Real Madrid, with Toni Kroos cryptically referring to a player who “came for a lot of money and basically let his career die.”
This summer, there were rumors that he would join Lionel Messi at Inter Miami or fly home, but neither plan has worked out.
Even though there are only a few weeks left until the transfer window closes, Mail Sport reports that Hazard is considering his options and is not in a rush to decide what to do.
After Belgium’s 2022 World Cup group stage elimination, Hazard has already retired from international football.
At his finest, Hazard scored 110 goals in 352 games while playing for Chelsea, winning the Premier League and Europa League twice, as well as four Player of the Year accolades.
