Fans believe Inter Miami’s victory over FC Dallas was unfair as Marco Farfan bizarrely scored an own goal off of a Lionel Messi free kick.
Messi stepped up to take a free kick on the outskirts of the area as Inter Miami trailed FC Dallas 4-2 in the League Cup.
The seven-time winner of the Ballon d’Or curled a ball outward toward the back post, where FC Dallas defender Farfan produced a bullet header into his own goal before collapsing to the ground, obviously confused by his own action.
It is hard to understand why the 24-year-old didn’t try to head it away from the goal or just let it go for a goal-kick as there was no Inter Miami player behind him. You can view the video. Fans immediately questioned the goal’s nature and asserted that the game had been manipulated.
One fan tweeted, “Messi had to pay bro off cuz no way.”
Another jokingly said, “Bro forgot he doesn’t play for Miami.
A fifth person added: “Looks so staged it’s unreal,” before another wrote: “Game fixed… common.”
Another tweet stated, “Bros out here getting assists to the other team.”
Messi had another free kick five minutes later, and he skillfully curled it into the top corner to equalize the score at 4-4 and force a penalty shootout.
In the most dramatic of circumstances, Inter Miami advanced to the round of 16 thanks to the successful conversion of both Messi and Sergio Busquets’ penalty kicks.
“We possess the world’s top player. This cannot be disregarded. Before being asked where the squad would be without Messi, he remarked, “The team is lethal when we have our moments.
“Wherever he goes, this subject is always raised. Anyone can wager on what Messi’s absence from Barcelona, the Argentina national team, or any other location would have looked like.
“Thankfully, we have him, and today he once again demonstrated that he is a very crucial player. He is the only player who, in my opinion, gives you the impression that a free kick in this area will almost always result in a goal.
“Normally, you would anticipate that a free kick would not result in a goal 90% of the time, but when he has it, the reverse happens. 10% of the time, you’ll think it won’t be a goal, but 90% of the time, it will be.
