Erik ten Hag delivered ‘classic Manchester United’ play in just 53 minutes, and the crowd was ecstatic.
With a 3-1 victory over Lens on Sunday, the Red Devils started their preseason workouts.
Andre Onana’s Old Trafford debut was marred by Florian Sotoca’s 40-yard lob after he was caught off his line.
But in the second half, United changed the game. Three minutes after the restart, Marcus Rashford restored parity, and then Antony and Casemiro put the game out of reach for the opposition.
Fans, however, are talking about the play leading up to Antony’s goal, with some comparing the counterattacking move to the legendary football performed by Sir Alex Ferguson.
From the edge of the penalty box, Bruno Fernandes initiated the move by sending a first-time pass to Rashford, who then deftly sent the ball to Alejandro Garnacho. The Argentine sprinted down the left wing before handing Antony a clear shot towards goal, who finished it expertly.
One fan tweeted: “If someone said to me that this was a clip from 07/08 season, I’d probably believe you.” Fans reacted quickly to the goal on social media.
“Everything was inch perfect here,” said another. After winning the ball, Rash swiftly passes it to Garnacho, who rapidly takes off. It might have been one of my favorite Ten Hag goals if it weren’t for the preseason.
Another added: “Ten Hag Ball! Another said, “Beautiful goal,” and a fourth said, “I could watch this all day.”
Another supporter said, “Garnacho was built for United counter attack ball.”
With less than a week until Ten Hag hosts Wolves in their Premier League season opener, it appears that everything has come together just in time for Ten Hag.
After the game, Ten Hag commented on his team’s performance to MUTV, saying, “When we win the ball against them [Lens], it’s really open. We have quick and direct players like Antony, Rashford, and Garnacho.
“You can create chances when you raise up your game. Although Lens is a good squad, we had to punish them, thus we did.
