Mason Mount missed an easy goal and overturned during his debut Old Trafford match with Manchester United, leaving him with a red face.
Just 15 minutes into the Red Devils’ preseason friendly against Ligue 1 side Lens, the £55 million signing missed a fantastic chance to debut for United in front of his new supporters.
Alejandro Garnacho’s run was expertly connected to by Bruno Fernandes’ raking pass during a United counterattack.
The former Nottingham Forest goalkeeper Brice Samba had shut down the young player when the Argentine took one touch before squaring along the six-yard box.
Mount had to stop running in order to receive Garnacho’s pass that was coming from behind him, but the 36-time England international absolutely blew his opportunity by kicking the ball with his left foot onto his right foot’s heel and collapsing.
As Lens eliminated the threat, United’s new No. 7 made an effort to shrug off his embarrassment although groans from the Old Trafford fans could still be heard.
One Chelsea supporter tweeted: “I still can’t believe we got £60m for Mason Mount,” while another added: “United fans realizing we were right about Mason Mount.” Fans on Twitter couldn’t believe the miss.
Piers Morgan joined in as well, remarking that “this United performance is turning into Comedy Central.”
And Mount has already missed an open goal against Lyon earlier in the preseason, so this is not the first time he has wasted a chance while wearing United’s uniform.
The Premier League season kicks out next weekend, so United supporters will be hoping he’s just getting them out of his system before then, but this adds more pressure for the England international to start playing quickly as the music starts.
Just minutes after Mount’s missed opportunity, Florian Sotoca’s spectacular shot from the halfway line gave Lens the lead, adding insult to Mount’s injury.
In order to give Andre Onana, who was well outside of goal, a bad start at Old Trafford as well, the Frenchman grabbed a wayward pass from Diogo Dalot and fired it towards him.
By scoring three goals in the second half—one each from Marcus Rashford, Antony, and Casemiro—the Red Devils were able to gain momentum and go on to win the match 3-1.
