Dominik Szoboszlai has discussed the significance of both his Steven Gerrard tattoo and why he selected Liverpool’s storied No. 8 jersey.
Szoboszlai became Jurgen Klopp’s second acquisition of the summer on Sunday when he transferred from RB Leipzig to Liverpool for £60 million.
His entry follows that of Alexis MacAllister, who, after signing from Brighton, has worn the No. 10 jersey, which was once worn by Sadio Mane before he left for Bayern Munich last summer.

As Naby Keita left the team, the No. 8 jersey, which was most prominently worn by Gerrard, was passed down to Szoboszlai.
Because of his accomplishments in Istanbul and commitment to the Merseyside club, Gerrard has historically served as an inspiration for many Liverpool players.
This admiration also goes out to Szoboszlai, who has a quotation from the late England midfielder tattooed on his arm: “Talent is a divine blessing, but without incredible will and humility, it is worth nothing.”
The 22-year-old is finally showing the depth of his strength.
Szoboszlai explains the tattoo on Gerrard.
In an interview with LFCTV regarding his arrival to Anfield, the Hungary international gave an explanation for why he chose to wear the No. 8 jersey.
“Not for any special reason, but it’s a large number,” he affirmed.
Many great players used this number.
The fact that Steven Gerrard gave me a tattoo and said something once that I can’t even recall is another factor.
The number 8, which was formerly worn by Emile Heskey before Gerrard, was prominently worn earlier by Oyvind Leonhardsen, Stan Collymore, Jamie Redknapp, and Paul Stewart.
After a disappointing 2022–23 season, Szoboszlai will try to revive Liverpool’s title hopes by emulating Gerrard’s accomplishments in a red shirt.
