Josko Gvardiol, a defender for RB Leipzig, is a target for Manchester City this summer.
Manchester City and RB Leipzig’s Josko Gvardiol have reached an agreement on a transfer fee of €90 million (£77.5 million).
On Wednesday, Josko Gvardiol watched RB Leipzig’s exhibition game against St. Truiden from the stands as City finalized a deal to bring the Croatian defender to the Etihad.
Leipzig set a deadline for the transfer to be finished before the start of their season to give them time to recruit a replacement, thus Gvardiol has been an objective for City all summer.
The 21-year-old will now travel to Manchester towards the end of this week to complete terms and get a physical, although it is unknown whether a deal will be reached.
Contrary to claims to the contrary, Gvardiol will not surpass Harry Maguire as the most expensive defender in the world because the fixed €90 million (£77.5 million) fee for the player is lower. There are no extras in the deal.
Compatriot Mateo Kovacic will join Guardiola as a summer addition, boosting City’s total outlay to £103 million. Over the next ten years, Guardiola is anticipated to have a significant role in City’s defense.
Kovacic said last week that he wanted Gvardiol to join the team and said, “I know he’s very young and has great potential.” He is welcome to come here, study, and develop into the best version of himself, as he unquestionably desires.
However, I’m not in a position to predict whether or not that will occur. Given that we are friends and that he is Croatian, I would undoubtedly appreciate it. A Croatian would be helpful to have here.
“He’s young but mature for his age,” someone said. He doesn’t need a lot of direction. He has already witnessed a number of significant games, so I think he is prepared for this next stage. It would be amazing for him to join such a big club and try to advance even further after having a fantastic World Cup and a fantastic season with RB Leipzig.
