It has been reported that Manchester City defender Joao Cancelo has agreed personal terms to sign for Barcelona.
This comes from Fabrizio Romano, after it was claimed on Wednesday that the £60 million (Telegraph) man was in talks to join Xavi’s side.
Fabrizio Romano has confirm: “Joao Cancelo has agreed personal terms with Barça, he wants the move… and Xavi wants him since January as priority target. Talks now ongoing with Manchester City over deal structure
“Barça plan revealed on Sunday: use part of Dembélé budget to try again for Cancelo.”
Now, it seems like Joao Cancelo in inching towards becoming a Barcelona player sooner rather than later.
Last season, it was heavily reported that the 29-year-old had a rift with Pep Guardiola, which led to both parties going their separate ways, with him joining Bayern Munich on loan.
While the Portuguese full-back has shown glimpses of his silky technical ability and flair going forward in pre-season, it was revealed just more than a week ago that Guardiola was still keen on his exit.
Now that Joao Cancelo has agreed to personal terms to join Barcelona this summer, it appears that the Manchester City manager may get his wish.
Additional information indicates that ‘talks are ongoing’ between the two clubs regarding the deal’s payment structure.
The former Juventus technician has been a “priority target” for Xavi since January, and the Spanish powerhouses aim to use some of the funds from Ousmane Dembele’s prospective transfer to PSG to sign him, the Italian journalist has underlined.
Manchester City would be buzzing with this deal
Manchester City would be glad to be in the process of offloading Joao Cancelo, even though it is still unknown what the possible transfer fee may be if he ends up wearing a Barcelona jersey.
Along with the much-discussed conflict between the player and Guardiola, he does not fit into City’s current defensive strategy, which involves playing four center backs.
Joao Cancelo didn’t appear to have many interested parties, therefore the Sky Blues would be happy to accept a compensation for the great player who, from a tactical standpoint, they have moved past.
