After shouting at teammate Harry Maguire during Manchester United’s 3-2 loss to Borussia Dortmund, Andre Onana has replied.
At the Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, goalkeeper Onana, a £47 million acquisition from Inter Milan, made his second appearance for the team.
He replaced Tom Heaton at the break, and a few minutes later, he was spotted becoming angry with former captain Maguire.
By applying pressure to Christian Eriksen with a pass, the England international caused Dortmund to lose control of the ball so that Sebastian Haller could take a shot.
After Onana made the save, Karim Adeyemi missed with the rebound. The Cameroonian ran out of his goal and yelled at Maguire, who appeared a little bashful, before he took his goal kick.
The outburst became a hot topic online, with some drawing comparisons to United icon Peter Schmeichel’s antics.
Gabriel Agbonlahor, a former forward for Aston Villa, expressed displeasure with Onana’s actions and said he “didn’t like it”.
Onana, though, has downplayed the outburst and maintains that it was simply the result of him expecting too much from his teammates.
The “top guy and fantastic player” Maguire, whom he described as having a “good relationship” with, was another point he emphasized.
Onana told Manchester United’s official website, “I try to talk to them a lot because I know he’s a good player, he is one of the captains of the team.”
‘’I would demand a lot from him because he is a good, great guy and since that is large and he is good with the ball. My relationship with him is good.
Because I believe we are all in this together and mistakes will be made, I’ll start with myself. We shouldn’t be frightened to make errors because they are a natural part of life and we can grow from them.
We must therefore be extremely critical of ourselves. And we need to demand a lot if we want to earn things. Being here is a great honor for me, and I’m thrilled to be working with these men; Harry is a great player and a great guy. We shall proceed.
Onana impressed spectators with what was essentially the game’s final kick when he pinged the ball perfectly onto Marcus Rashford’s foot down the left, demonstrating why Erik ten Hag brought him in.
The weekend schedule for United includes two games in two days: on Saturday, August 5, they welcome RC Lens, and on Sunday, August 6, they play Athletic Club at the Aviva Stadium.
