After being named Liverpool’s new vice-captain by Jurgen Klopp, Trent Alexander-Arnold broke down in tears and beamed broadly.
On Monday, the 24-year-old was promoted to the position of vice-captain after Virgil van Dijk replaced Jordan Henderson as captain of the club’s first squad.
As the two defenders take on new leadership positions at Anfield, Van Dijk will be in charge of the team’s day-to-day operations and will be assisted by Alexander-Arnold.

While warming up for their penultimate preseason match against Leicester in Singapore, Liverpool’s boss pulled the England international to one side.
In the midst of their chat, Klopp walked across the field with Alexander-Arnold, the right back, at the Singapore National Stadium.
The German manager continues the conversation by explaining his choice, but he eventually stops to put his arms around Alexander-Arnold’s head and embrace him.
As Klopp and Alexander-Arnold embraced, the manager was presumably discussing the obligations and duties that his new vice-captain would be faced with.
Klopp and the Liverpool star clap hands as the conversation ends, indicating their mutual happiness with the outcome.
In the first half of Liverpool’s 4-0 preseason victory over their Championship opponents in Asia, Alexander-Arnold saw action.
The Liverpool native and Premier League/Champions League winner simply expressed his gratitude on social media by posting a photo of himself and Van Dijk with the caption, “We’re ready.”
On August 13, Liverpool will open their Premier League season against Chelsea.
