After the former Red Devils captain nearly cost his team a goal on Monday during Manchester United’s 3-2 loss to Borussia Dortmund with some careless defense, Andre Onana has cautioned Harry Maguire to maintain focus at all times.
47 minutes into the match, the Cameroonian goalkeeper yelled at his defender for losing possession and handing Dortmund’s attackers a goal-scoring opportunity.
Sebastien Haller’s attempt was stopped by Onana, who then blocked Karim Adeyemi’s follow-up shot.
When the ball was no longer in play, the former Inter Milan goalie ran over to Maguire and yelled at him.
In a post-game interview, Onana confirmed that he gets along well with Maguire but reiterated that he needs to “be ready” whenever he has the ball.
Onana told MUTV, “I try to demand a lot from him because I know he is a good player.”
He is one of the team’s captains. He’s large and skilled with the ball, so I’ll put a lot of pressure on him. He’s a great man, and I get along well with him.
He needs to be ready since I demand a lot from everyone when I’m on the ball, starting with myself because we are in this together.
We shouldn’t be frightened to make errors because they are a natural part of life and we may learn from them.
We must be really critical of ourselves, he continued. We must make a lot of demands if we want to earn awards.
We will continue because Harry is a tremendous athlete and it is a great honor for me to be here.
Maguire is anticipated to quit Old Trafford this summer after losing Erik ten Hag’s favor.
The 30-year-old was placed on the club’s transfer list since he only started eight games last year.
An apparent £40 million asking price from United for the England international has proven to be a deterrent for prospective suitors.
West Ham just had a £20 million deal for the player rejected, and given the huge disparity in value between the two teams, it is unlikely that they will try again with a better offer.
