Five things learned when Manchester United lost 3-2 to Borussia Dortmund: Antony back, silly goals

Manchester United finished their preseason tour of the United States with a 3-2 setback in Las Vegas on Monday morning.

Diogo Dalot opened the scoring in the first half, curling a shot from distance into the top corner.

The first half seemed comfortable until late in the second, when Donyell Malen scored a brace in less than a minute as a result of shoddy and lazy defensive work by United. This left the Germans leading 2-1 at halftime.

Following a penalty box panic by Dortmund, van de Beek handed the ball over to Antony, who tapped it in into the bottom corner just six minutes into the second half.

Dortmund then retook the lead as a result of another poor goal.

Dalot scores a beauty

This summer, Dalot has been the club’s second-choice right-back behind Aaron Wan-Bissaka, but he hasn’t let that bother him.He broke the deadlock in the first half, looping his effort past Gregor Kobel and into the Dortmund goal after a wonderful assist by Donny van de Beek.

This finale won’t change Erik Ten Hag’s mind about his starting right-back, but it was a fantastic finish.

Sancho and Pellistri’s sharp

Jadon Sancho has looked bright during the preseason, scoring against Arsenal and settling into his new role as a false nine.

Sancho, on the other hand, was at his best against Dortmund, with brilliant touches and flicks that kept Dortmund at bay.

Meanwhile, our Uruguayan international was running rings around the Dortmund full-back on the left wing.

With his direct dribbling, he continually posed questions and demonstrated that he is ready to be a regular member of this United team.

Too talented to be squandered; if he isn’t playing, we need to find him a suitable loan.

Antony is back among the goals

Antony came on in the first half to replace Omari Forson, who was kicked off before 40 minutes owing to his on-field scuffles and bad play in general.

Antony then equalized for United in the 51st minute, capitalizing on some sloppy Dortmund defense to get his magic left foot onto the ball.

Van de Beek sent it up for Antony, who finished low into the far bottom corner through a packed box, beating the Dortmund keeper.

Stupid goals to concede

United was repeatedly giving Dortmund possession in dangerous areas, which was the source of all goals conceded today.

Passes that half our defense would never make highlighted the lack of depth and quality in key positions.

It’s concerning that one injury to Raphael Varane forces us to pick between Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof, and Jonny Evans.

A defender with similar on-ball skills to Lisandro Martinez is required, and Dalot must maintain his form because he is considerably superior for United.

Exciting attacking moves

Despite their defensive troubles, United looked quite dangerous on the attack, particularly when the big guns came on.

Mason Mount, Marcus Rashford, Casemiro, and Bruno Fernandes were all excellent in the build-up as United launched several promising assaults that did not result in an equalizer.

United were defeated 3-2 as Antony missed an open net and Joe Hugill squandered his big chance, but there were some great positives in the offensive sense that should have Wolves scared for two weeks now.
