Real Madrid’s 2-0 victory over Manchester United represented the Red Devils’ toughest test of the preseason trip thus far.
Jude Bellingham’s goals and Joselu’s spectacular goal were enough for Los Galacticos to win in the United States. Undoubtedly, it was United’s most difficult preseason assignment yet.
Before this game, United had easily dispatched Leeds, Lyon, and Arsenal while allowing no goals in the process, with the exception of the Wrexham match, which featured only youth players.
Looking at the stats individually, many players faltered, including one who was predicted to be in a memorable matchup in Houston.
0 tackles: Did Aaron-Wan Bissaka lose the battle to Vini Jr?
The English full-back played 62 minutes, according to Sofa Score, and made no tackles. This is not the Wan-Bissaka that we are familiar with, who is, on his best day, among the top tacklers in all of football.
Before the friendly match, a few thrilling battles were broadcast. The matchup between Jude Bellingham, the new face of Madrid, and Kobbie Mainnoo, the top young prospect for United, was expected to be spectacular.
However, this was drastically cut short when Mainoo left the game with an injury after only six minutes. The other intriguing matchup pitted Wan-Bissaka against Vini Jr.
Sometimes stats can lie
Because Vini Jr. played as a striker rather than a winger, the match wasn’t quite what the supporters had hoped for. He remained loyal to Wan-Bissaka despite this, and he played the entire game in silence.
In the first half, Wan-Bissaka was among United’s more effective players. He even appeared much more capable moving forward, which was obviously noticeable in the earlier games of the tour.
So, to sum up the showdown, it seems neither actually prevailed. But it’s a little odd to watch a match where the English full-back makes 0 challenges.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka is usually a wingers nightmare
Wan-Bissaka has a long list of players he has ‘pocketed’ including Kylian Mbappe, Eden Hazard, and Sadio Mane. He shut down Brighton’s Kaoru Mitoma earlier this year, with the Japan international describing it as a ‘complete defeat’. United now plays Dortmund, where Wan-Bissaka will likely face the tricky Thorgan Hazard. Who will win that one?
