As Real Madrid continues their pre-season tour of the United States, first-choice goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois sat out of training today owing to mild discomfort, according to Mario Cortegana of The Athletic.
However, the writer emphasizes that the Belgian international’s condition is not cause for concern. However, the staff requested that the custodian work with the physios today rather of training with the group.
On Wednesday night, Real Madrid will meet Manchester United in their second preseason friendly of their US tour. With Courtois suffering from discomfort, it will be interesting to see if he is fit enough to face the Red Devils.
In recent seasons, the 31-year-old has been a stellar performer for Los Blancos and is the uncontested first choice between the sticks. Despite significant fitness issues last season, Courtois ended up playing 49 times in all competitions.
In terms of backup, Real Madrid’s second-choice goalkeeper is Andriy Lunin. This past weekend, the Ukrainian started the first friendly match of the US trip against AC Milan and ended up losing two goals.
Lunin also received a reprimand from goalkeeping coach Luis Llopis during a recent training session. While gifted, the 24-year-old does not provide the same level of consistency as Courtois.
As a result, Los Blancos will be hoping that the Belgian’s paιn isn’t serious and that he can return to action as soon as possible.
It is unclear whether Courtois will play against Manchester United. The Belgian is not the only Real Madrid player whose participation is in doubt; Arda Guler is also unlikely to feature in the upcoming game due to a slight nιggle.
