Marcus Rashford acknowledged that he is not the solution as Erik Ten Hag’s frantic search for a striker continues.
Just 19 days before Manchester United’s Premier League start against Wolves, Boss Ten Hag still hasn’t found the No. 9 he needs.
Rasmus Hojlund, who scored 10 goals in 34 games last season for the Serie A team, is wanted by Atalanta for £86 million.
The 20-year-old Dane is believed to be eager to transfer, but United has thus far declined to pay more than £60 million.
And after learning that Tottenham striker Harry Kane wants £30m a year, or £577,000 a week, Ten Hag appears unlikely to pursue his top target.
Anthony Martial, a Frenchman, has recently resumed training after suffering his most recent injury, and Rashford seems like a natural choice to fill Ten Hag’s troublesome position.
Rashford, who this week agreed to a new contract worth £325,000 per week through 2028, cautioned the Dutchman that he did not want the role on a full-time basis.
“I feel like at center-forward you’ve got less distance to cover to score simple goals, I do prefer left-wing,” he said on the podcast The Overlap.
“I’ve always wanted to be involved in the game, and it’s just simpler to stay in it if you’re on the left,” the player said.
“As a result, I occasionally have trouble playing at center forward because of my patience.
“It’s possible that you go 20 minutes without touching the ball before you have a chance to score. You need to be mentally alert.
Last season, Burnley’s Wout Weghorst was brought in on loan to fill the vacuum up front, and Martial played when healthy.
However, the Frenchman’s SIX different injuries caused him to miss 28 games.
Martial, 27, has been admonished by former Ajax manager Ten Hag that he must “take responsibility” for making himself accessible more frequently.
Ten Hag stated before the team’s early Wednesday morning match against Wrexham in San Diego: “When a guy is in your squad, you have to expect he is accessible, and players have to accept responsibility.
“If not, I’ll have to handle the situation, and we’ve demonstrated that we can still succeed without. But having that striker on the team makes winning trophies easier.
Martial scored just nine goals in 29 appearances last season after being sent on a fruitless loan to Sevilla in 2021–2022, where he scored just once in 12 games.
Ten Hag, though, feels that United were always stronger with him on the team.
Anthony Martial is a fantastic football player, so he will help us score goals, he continued, “We need a good squad.
“He’s just a great player; we hope he’s fit and stays fit. There are other areas like pressing and combinations.”
After finishing last season with the lowest goal total in the top six of the Premier League (58), United is in serious need of more goals.
Rashford, who scored the most goals overall, has a 30 total, a career high.
During the campaign, Taskmaster Ten Hag did express concerns about the England international’s inability to focus for the entire 90 minutes of a game.
He thinks that needs to be fixed in order for him to equal and even top those 30 goals.
“When his attitude is right, he will do that,” Ten Hag remarked.
