Barcelona’s pre-season tour of the United States didn’t get off to the best of times. The Catalans were supposed to face Juventus in their first friendly on Saturday night, but the match was canceled due to some members of the team suffering from stomach upset.
Reports come after the announcement that up to 15 players had been exposed to the stomach virus while several members of the coaching staff were also affected.
Now, Mundo Deportivo has shed some light on the consequences of the Barcelona vs Juventus match being cancelled.
The La Liga champions won’t incur any penalty for the cancellation as they already have insurance for this type of problem.
However, the cancellation of the match will affect the Blaugrana’s finances somewhat as they will miss out on potential revenue of around 2 million euros.
Barcelona are expecting earnings of around 12 million euros from the initial four friendlies they were scheduled to play in the US. And it is estimated that they will now miss about 2 million euros due to the match being cancelled.
To avoid the same, the possibility of postponing the match to a later date was considered, but ultimately, there was no way, as Barça president Joan Laporta confirmed.
“It’s been a very heavy blow, especially for the affected players, for whom I hope and wish them a speedy recovery. It’s hard because all the Barça fans are looking forward to going to San Francisco today, playing against Juve,” Laporta said.
“Unfortunately, the match was canceled because the summer tour was very tightly scheduled and we don’t have any more dates for this match to take place. We’ll see how we can make it somehow. It is what it is and we have to accept it.”
