Amid the absence of normal captain Jordan Henderson, Liverpool midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai has expressed gratitude to Virgil van Dijk for assuming that role.

If Jordan Henderson departs the team in the near future, according to Dominik Szoboszlai, a recent addition to Liverpool, Virgil van Dijk will succeed him as captain.

Henderson has been in charge since former Reds great Steven Gerrard departed the team in 2015, despite persistent rumors that he is interested in a lucrative transfer to Al-Ettifaq of the Saudi Pro League. The pursuit is being led by Gerrard, who was recently anointed the team’s new head coach.

Henderson was absent from Liverpool’s 4-2 victory over Karlsruher in Germany on Wednesday due to a £12 million contract between the Reds and Al-Ettifaq that has still to be finalized.

Van Dijk replied to a message made by Szoboszlai with an emoji of the letter C for captain. Van Dijk has already received acclaim for his leadership abilities and is widely seen as Henderson’s immediate replacement, so he may have been alluding to the Netherlands international taking the armband for one game.

In recent weeks, the Saudi Pro League has shown interest in a number of prominent Premier League stars, including Fabinho, who is expected to depart Merseyside this summer. He missed the game on Wednesday because he was speaking with Al-Ittihad.

Henderson has been given permission to go from Liverpool’s training camp in Germany while he weighs his options for the future.

However, Reds boss Jurgen Klopp emphasized that nothing has been decided upon at this point to allay additional reports that Henderson and Fabinho are close to making a decision to part ways.

After the game on Wednesday, Klopp told the media, “We don’t have to talk about it as long as things aren’t actually decided. At some point, we’ll surely need to discuss it, but not now.
