JORDAN HENDERSON is about to become the first English star to go for the Saudi Pro League and take the money.
After Liverpool and Al-Ettifaq reached an agreement on a £12 million transfer fee with add-ons for their captain, he is expected to sign a massive £108 million three-year contract.
The Three Lions midfielder joins a growing list of celebrities who have accepted Saudi mega-deals, earning more than quadruple his Anfield pay at £700,000 per week.
Jurgen Klopp, the manager of the Kop, acknowledged: “In the end, all of these decisions are made by me.
And it’s typically done with their permission because I value them highly. It was in this instance, and everything is well.
Anfield friend Fabinho, 29, will soon follow Henderson, 33, out of the club’s German training facility and head to Saudi Arabia. Liverpool and Al-Ittihad have just reached an agreement on a £40 million transfer fee for the Brazilian.
We don’t have to talk about it, Klopp said in response to a question regarding the deals. We will likely need to discuss it at some point, but not right now.
Henderson was dropped from the team that defeated Bundesliga II club Karlsruher 4-2 last night despite the German manager pleading with him to finish the final two years of his contract.
He admitted to Klopp that he thought Dominik Szoboszlai, who cost £60 million from RB Leipzig, and World Cup winner Alexis MacAllister, who cost £40 million from Brighton, would limit his playing time in the upcoming campaign.
Hendo was getting ready to catch up with former Kop captain Steven Gerrard at Al-Ettifaq.
And his impending departure as one of the biggest names in English football is a huge slap in the face to the team he has represented for 12 years as well as the Premier League.
The Saudis are spending so much money that Prem managers are worried more of their star players would go.
Henderson is actually betting on something more valuable than Saudi gold: England’s potential to win the 2024 European Championship in Germany.
He will be the first representative of England to move to a nation that has in recent weeks completely upended the football world.
Other England stars in their prime will follow if Henderson succeeds and is able to maintain his position in Gareth Southgate’s Three Lions team.
Euro Blocked?
The following matches for England are in Scotland and Ukraine in September, followed by home matches against Australia and Italy in October.
Henderson may come to regret this choice if he returns from Saudi Arabia for the internationals and his sharpness is only about 80% of where it should be.
He has 77 caps for England and is still a starter in midfield alongside Jude Bellingham and Declan Rice for Southgate’s squad.
Since Henderson and Southgate have a good working relationship, it is difficult to see Henderson making this choice without the manager of the Three Lions’ approval.
The Saudi Pro League, which averages 10,000 spectators, is drawing some A-listers, but the standard is regarded as being below par and still not as high as the Championship.
Henderson would not have retained his spot in the England team if he had chosen to transfer to Leeds or Leicester this summer.
GETTING PAID
His salary would soar to £36 million each year for the following three seasons despite just having two years remaining on his Reds contract.
He makes the same assertion as his former Liverpool teammate Bobby Firmino, who has also been to Saudi Arabia, that the money being given will change his life.
But earning £10 million annually at Liverpool is very significant.
Henderson is one of the nice men, but after this, his reputation will be damaged for many people.
MR. NICE GUY IS OUT
Henderson was a key figure in the creation of the Players Together campaign, which urged professional football players to support the NHS.
In 2019, when England’s black players were subjected to repugnant racial abuse in Bulgaria, it was Henderson who went before the media to denounce a sizable portion of the fans who had behaved so shamefully.
Finally, and perhaps most importantly given that we are discussing Saudi Arabia, Henderson has rightfully come under fire from Liverpool’s LGBT+ supporters organization, Kop Outs.
They are understandably “appalled and concerned” that the club’s captain, who has worked so hard for their cause, is relocating to a nation where homosexuality is prohibited.
