With interest from West Ham, Tottenham, Newcastle, and Chelsea, Maguire, 30, is aware that his time at Old Trafford is running out.

“After discussions with the manager today, he informed me that he is going to change the captain,” the £85 million buyer, who made no mention of Ten Hag in his social media post, wrote.

“He explained his reasons to me and while I am personally extremely disappointed, I will continue to give my best every time I put on the shirt.

“So I wanted to say a massive thank you to the Manchester United fans for all their brilliant support whilst I’ve been wearing the armband.

“Since the day I took up this role, three and a half years ago, to manage Manchester United has been a tremendous privilege and one of the proudest moments of my career to date.

“It is one of the greatest honors in club football.

“I did everything I could to help United succeed – on and off the pitch.

“I will always be grateful to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer for being the first person to put me in charge and I wish whoever took it on will have much success and they will receive my full support.”

Mauricio Pochettino interested in bringing Maguire to Chelsea

SunSport revealed eight days ago that Maguire has been stripped of the captaincy – with Bruno Fernandes likely to take over the role ahead of Casemiro .

The English defender moved there in 2019 from Leicester, but Ten Hag demoted him last year.

In January, half of the Premier League clubs tried to loan him out, and while United has set a lofty asking price of £50 million, it is likely to reduce to 30 million.

The center-back is also needed by Inter Milan, Al-Nassr, and Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia in addition to Prem.

Maguire’s two-year, £200,000 per week deal with United is still in effect.
