Luis Diaz returned to the field despite not playing for Liverpool. Instead, he returned to his hometown to say goodbye to a former comrade.
The majority of Liverpool’s new No. 7’s summer vacation was spent there. He laced up his boots a few days before preseason practice to play in a special game for an old friend.
Diaz’s first team, Atletico Junior, was saying goodbye to goalkeeper Sebastian Viera, who had spent 12 years with them, played 639 games, and helped them win seven championships.
Diaz and Viera appeared in 91 of those games. Diaz has been asked to play in Viera’s final game on Saturday.
Fans applauded as Diaz and his daughter returned to the field before the game to see him where he once played.
Junior won easily by 5-0 despite Diaz, who was wearing No. 23 that day, missing an early penalty after hitting the post.
We’ll assume he was thinking of Viera because it was his last day.

Diaz played on the left flank for Liverpool at the Estadio Metropolitano, and we’ll see him there a lot this season.
Due to a severe knee injury, the 26-year-old only played in 21 games last season.

Some may have been concerned to see him on the field so soon before preseason began, but it was a good way for him to clear his mind before returning to the AXA Training Centre on Tuesday.
People are excited to see him play alongside Mohamed Salah, Cody Gakpo, Diogo Jota, and Darwin Nunez, a forward line capable of annihilating any defense.
