Prior to anticipated meetings with Chelsea, Levi Colwill’s future is still openly debated. The defender is also expected to have discussions of his own as he considers his options.
The 20-year-old center back, a Chelsea player, has played 54 professional games over the course of the last two seasons while on loan at Huddersfield and Brighton.
He has since established himself as a promising young talent, and Liverpool, who are looking for a left-sided defender, have been closely monitoring his situation at Stamford Bridge.
Along with Harvey Elliott and Curtis Jones, Colwill was a member of the Young Lions team that won the U21 European championship, and now everyone is waiting to see what happens next.
The Englishman does not want to give up playing time after receiving it consistently for the past two seasons as he works to get into Gareth Southgate’s senior squad.
After England’s victory, he said to the press, according to The Times, “I’ll speak to my family, speak to everyone I need to, and make a decision.
To potentially make it there and attend the upcoming [senior] camp, I have to play at the end of the day.
Colwill will “still be happy” if he stays in the England U21 squad, but it is obvious that Colwill needs more playing time at the club level, something that new Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino will have to provide.
Benoit Badiashile, a left-sided center back who was only acquired by Chelsea in January from Monaco, will be crucial for the pair.
Liverpool can intervene in this situation and demonstrate to Colwill that playing time is available at Anfield, particularly in light of their formation change to a 3-4-3 at the tail end of the previous campaign.
The Reds are now searching for a specialist player to play on the left side of the back three, where Colwill would fit in perfectly due to his calm demeanor and quick feet.
The 20-year-old’s Chelsea contract, which according to the Guardian contains an option for an additional year for games played, expires in 2026, and as a homegrown talent for the future, the price tag will be significant, make a transaction challenging to execute.
Colwill is aware of Jurgen Klopp’s excellent track record of giving young players regular playing time, something Chelsea has not exactly been known for.
The future of the Reds’ defense will soon be decided, and Liverpool ought to be there to throw their hat into the ring for a player who might hold the key to that future.
